I have no idea what to write about
My sonnet is going to be lame
Its just that no ideas with spout
And when it does I hope I won't have a sense of shame
This sonnet is just not coming out
It's not fair that others can write it the right way
That makes me pout and act out
Sometimes it makes me shy away
My brain just won't let me think
Brain fart is what they call it
It just wont klink
I still can't think not even a little bit
I still can't write my piece of literature
It just won't flow
What can I say I'm just not a good interpreter
Maybe I'll give it just one more go
What should I write about cats, dogs, culture
Or maybe about my cousin's vulture

East New York People
Always have the newest clothes and newest shoes
But always need to hold a dollar
Got style
Got swagger
Don't go to college
Don't have much knowledge
get shot
and overdose a lot
get locked up
and knocked up
all before they're
Seventeen
Well I'm from here
and we are
defintely
not like that
But always need to hold a dollar
Got style
Got swagger
Don't go to college
Don't have much knowledge
get shot
and overdose a lot
get locked up
and knocked up
all before they're
Seventeen
Well I'm from here
and we are
defintely
not like that

Foreword: Stereotypes *******DRAFT#1*******
When I first heard that we had to write a collection for our blogs I never figured I'd want to write about stereotypes. I came up with the idea from riding the train. There were a bunch of kids not much older than ten talking and then one outbursted "What are you drinking?" to the one African- American in the group. The kid answered "Kool-Aid" and the kid said back "Yo!!!! He's drinking Kool-Aid 'cause he's Black!!!!" And just remembered thinking, Why do people always stereotype African- Americans? If it's not Kool-Aid it's fried chicken it just doesn't end. When I got off the train it was all I could think about. I wanted to do something, I realized that it wasn't just Black people being stereotyped it was everyone White, Black, Asian everyone. Out of this incident the idea came to write about stereotpes.
When I wrote my first poem had my mind set on writing a list of what things that were stereotypical in East New York since it's where i live. Writing this poem made me write about writing about different people and asking others what they are stereotyped for and how it affects them. I asked several friends and family members who live in my neighborhood and what they have been stereotyped for. From their answers evolved the poem 'East New York People.'
My second poem(Being Mixed) was actually inspired by a book I had read days before called 'Am I Blue?' A collection of stories of being gay by authors who know about it firsthand. There was one story in particular where the main character was mixed and she embraced her being different even if others did not. Being Mixed shows that not all of us can be that brave.

My Papa's Waltz Response
My Papa's Waltz
by: Theodore Roethke
The wiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death:
Such a waltzing was not easy.
We romped until the pans
Slid from the kitchen shelf;
My mother's countenance
Could not unfrown itself.
The hand that held the wrist
Was battered on one knuckled;
At every step you missed
My right ear scraped a buckle.
You beat time on my head
With a palm caked hard by dirt,
Then waltzed me off to bed
Still clinging to your shirt.
Response:
When I first read this poem I had no idea what was going on. I reread the poem and figured that it was about a boy that was being abused by his father. It made me think 'was this the theme of the poem.' There were also several lines proving this point. ex: 'At every step you missed My right ear scraped a buckle'. I also realized that just because it says 'my right ear scraped a buckle' doesnt mean the boy's father beat him. If his father was tipsy and he missed a step in the waltz and the boy slipped and his ear grazed his father's belt buckle. I then decided to define the word 'countenance' I had an idea that it meant upset but helpless but i wanted a second opinion. The online definiton was 'n. to support or encouragement; sanction.' That brought me to another idea; was she really incouraging her son and her husband to have this 'waltz' or fight. Or was this mother doing this to save herself from this horrible monster called: Papa.

Observations of Jim Warren's "Mother Nature- in the new Millenium"
Observations | Inferences |
- the woman in the center of the painting taking up most of the painting -one side is a pretty, natrual enviorment while the other side has pollution and eruptions -she's staring out of the painting towards the people looking at it -if you ignore the woman's features then you can see a really pretty valley and a car is driving past | -because she's very important in the painting - maybe she's mother earth andshe's protecting the natrual area and straining away from the other side - it reminds me of avatar because she has this love for the earth around her - this is a real place and he added her to show her protect this sacred place |
